TAVI (also known as TAVR) is a minimally invasive procedure used to replace a narrowed or damaged aortic valve without the need for open-heart surgery. It is performed using a catheter-based approach, offering a shorter recovery time compared to traditional valve replacement surgery.
What It Involves
- A catheter is guided through a blood vessel, typically from the groin, up to the heart
- A new valve is positioned and expanded within the diseased aortic valve
- Performed under imaging guidance in a catheterization laboratory
Who May Need This
- Patients with severe aortic valve stenosis (narrowing)
- Patients considered high-risk or inoperable for traditional open-heart valve surgery
- Patients advised by their cardiologist that a catheter-based valve replacement is appropriate
What to Expect
Most patients are evaluated with imaging tests prior to the procedure to assess suitability. Recovery time is generally shorter than open-heart surgery, with many patients discharged within a few days, depending on individual clinical condition.
