A pacemaker is a small device implanted to help regulate an abnormally slow or irregular heartbeat. An Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD/AICD) monitors heart rhythm continuously and can deliver a corrective impulse if a dangerous rhythm is detected.
What It Involves
- Assessment of heart rhythm through ECG and monitoring
- Implantation of the device under local anaesthesia, typically below the collarbone
- Post-implantation device programming and follow-up
Who May Need This
- Patients with a diagnosed slow heart rhythm (bradycardia)
- Patients at risk of life-threatening arrhythmias who may benefit from an ICD
- Patients requiring device-based heart failure therapy (CRT-D)
What to Expect
The implantation procedure typically takes under two hours. Patients are monitored post-procedure, with periodic device check-ups scheduled thereafter.
